Justin Croft

The life and work of Elizabeth Giraud, Faversham’s Victorian flower artist. Born in Faversham in 1816 and living in the town for most of her life, Jane Elizabeth Giraud was a successful botanical painter. She published three popular books, including one illustrating the flowers of Shakespeare. Local antiquarian bookseller and BBC Antiques Roadshow contributor Justin Croft has long been fascinated by these books and has pursued Jane’s work around the world. He will be talking about her love of garden and hedgerow flowers, but also how she brought her work to print ― making her mark in the burgeoning but competitive world of Victorian publishing. Justin will talk about the long tradition of women in print in the sphere of botanical illustration, looking in detail at her books in slides and original copies.
