Lev Parikian, who is fast becoming one of Britain’s best loved nature writers, tells the awe-inspiring evolutionary story of flight, exploring the how, why and when of flight in the animal kingdom. Flight has evolved four times through its evolutionary history of over more than 300 million years and it occurred in four distinct groups of animals: insects, pterosaurs, birds and bats. Lev has chosen fourteen species to chart and illustrate this remarkable history.
Lev Parikian is a writer, birdwatcher and music conductor. He is the author of Into the Tangled Bank, longlisted for the Wainwright Prize; Light Rains Sometimes Fall; and Why Do Birds Sometimes Disappear? As a birdwatcher, his most prized sightings are a golden oriole in the Alpujarras and a black redstart at Dungeness Power Station. Lev was the instigator of the popular ‘Twitter Birdsong Project’ – a day-by-day guide designed to help beginners unravel the mysteries of birdsong.
