Renaissance Italy is the setting for the much-anticipated new novel by the author of Hamnet (winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction 2020). Here, we enter the little-known story of Lucrezia, a daughter of Cosimo di Medici who, aged 16, is married to Alfonso, Duke of Ferrara. Oozing with art and artifice, the story is inspired by a poem by Robert Browning about a painting of a young woman who railed against the dynastic system she was born into.
Maggie will be in conversation with Andy Miller, presenter of Backlisted podcast.
Maggie O'Farrell is the author of The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox; This Must Be the Place; I Am I Am I Am, among others.
