Alia Trabucco Zerán and Sema Kaygusuz

Two powerful and topical narratives about historical memory. Shortlisted for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize, 'The Remainder' is Alia Trabucco Zerán's debut novel, exploring the repercussions of history for the children of those who fought against Chile’s dictatorship, told through a darkly comic road trip set in modern-day Santiago. It was chosen by El País as one of its top ten debuts of 2015.

Sema Kaygusuz is one of Turkey’s leading female writers. 'Every Fire You Tend' tells the story of a granddaughter’s reckoning with the suppressed and traumatic memories of her grandmother, who survived a genocidal massacre in southeast Turkey in 1938. Sema is the author of 'Wine and Gold' and in 2007 won the Golden Shell at the 2008 International Film Festival for her screenplay 'Pandora's Box'. She has published three acclaimed short story collections and is a recipient of the Cevdet-Kudret-Literature Award and the France-Turquie Literary Award. In 2016 she was named laureate of the prestigious German Friedrich Rückert Prize.
