In Shadowlands, shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing 2022, historian Matthew Green traces a path through the ruins of Britain's 'shadow' places lost to natural phenomena, war and plague, economic shifts and technological progress. How did these places meet their fate? From a lost city unearthed by moles, to lingering remains as they are mourned by evictees and reimagined by artists, writers and mavericks – we get a picture of many different British landscapes to the one we know today. Matthew Green is a historian and broadcaster with a doctorate from the University of Oxford. He writes for national newspapers, has appeared in many television documentaries, and is the author of London: A Travel Guide Through Time.
