Celebrating Iain M Banks

Celebrating Iain M Banks

Writer Iain Banks (1954–2013) lived in Faversham between September 1983 and January 1988, just as his career was taking off with sales from The Wasp Factory, originally published in 1984 and celebrating its 40th anniversary with a new edition. David Haddock, Paul Kincaid and Andrew Butler discuss Banks's work and contribution to literature.

David Haddock published 21 issues of an Iain (M) Banks fanzine between 2004 and 2014, as well as compiling a bibliography of over 400 translations of Banks's work along with a collection of 77 different editions of The Wasp Factory. His specialist subjects on Mastermind would be the pre-publication work of Iain Banks, Douglas Adams in Cambridge and The Use and Abuse of ISBNs.

Paul Kincaid wrote a book called Iain M Banks in the series Modern Masters of Science Fiction, which won the British Science Fiction Association award for non-fiction. He invited Iain to his first science fiction convention back in 1986.

Andrew Butler teaches at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has published widely on science fiction, and less often on fantasy, in journals and magazines.
