Carol Donaldson's debut is an extraordinary exploration into the waterlands of the north Kent marshes through a series of walks, which is also an examination of the landscapes, wildlife and people who choose to make their home in these liminal lands. While working for the RSPB she lived in a caravan on the Kent marshes for three years, a lifestyle she loved but she was sadly evicted and moved to a nearby town. Carol embarked on a series of walks between Gravesend and Whitstable and On the Marshes tells the story of this 'pilgrimage' to the watery margins she encountered and the people who dwell there.
Carol writes and freelances as an environmental consultant. She runs an environmental consultancy and writes for Wanderlust, and The Telegraph. She was BBC Wildlife Magazine Travel Writer of the Year in 2011.
Carol will be in conversation with Peter Saxton, publisher liaison manager and head buyer at Waterstones.
